Grant Information

Year of Grant2024
Description of project funded by grant:

With the support of the Prichard Family Foundation, the Art Museum of South Texas exhibited three culturally significant exhibitions, with one additional exhibit planned before year end. These include:

Photography IS Art: AMST partnered with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Art Bridges, Amarillo Museum of Art, and the Ellen Noel Museum of Art to present "Photography is Art." This exhibition explored the question "Has photography always been considered art?" It wasn’t until the late 1970s and early 1980s that many museums began actively collecting and displaying photographs. "Photography Is Art" told the story of American photographers’ efforts, from the late 19th century on, to explore and proclaim photography’s artfulness.

Noe Perez: The King Ranch Paintings: King Ranch, established in 1853, looms large in American history and perhaps even larger in the popular imagination. During a drought in south Texas and northern Mexico Richard King purchased the cattle from the families of the ranching community of Cruillas, Tamaulipas, and invited them to move to his ranch and become his workforce. These families became known as Los Kineños (King’s people). In addition to highlighting King Ranch’s significant historical impact, the exhibition, and related programming, showcased Los Kineños--those whose work and expertise were essential to the success of King Ranch and an important part of Texas history.

War Toys: Ukraine: Since 2011, internationally recognized photographer Brian McCarty has been collaborating with children who have been affected by conflict on a unique project titled War Toys, which is now active in and near Ukraine. The project invoked principles and practices of expressive art therapy to safely gather and articulate children’s accounts of warfare. Children learned how to process complicated feelings through a playful filter and explored tough questions in a language that is easier for them to understand. The exhibit included thirty of the children’s drawings presented alongside McCarty’s photographs.

TARGET TEXAS: Studio Practice (OPENING SEPTEMBER 13): Target Texas is part of AMST's commitment to fostering creativity, facilitating learning, and celebrating the power of art to enrich lives and build a stronger, more culturally connected community. This exhibition is presented every other year and always focuses on the work of living Texas artists. This year’s theme, Studio Practice, explores what it means to live in today’s world as a working artist and aims to pull the curtain back into the heart of what makes these artists work in the ways they do, putting the artistic process at the forefront of the curatorial and educational experience.

AMST Exhibitions are ongoing projects for which AMST enjoys continuous and reliable sources of funding including foundation, government, individual, and corporate support. AMST is grateful for the continued generosity and support of the Prichard Family Foundation and their willingness to support the arts in our community. With the support of the Prichard Family Foundation, AMST has served over 75,000 people year to date. This is an ongoing project that will be completed on 12/31/2024. Expenses are ongoing until the completion date.
